This is an attempt to render tones in false colour; using a pink and pastel blue to represent mid-tones between white and black on black paper. It began as a dog-sketch, that is a drawing done in the time it takes for a spaniel to become bored waiting for me. I reworked it later at home.
Alongside drawing I am also trying to learn to play this Balkan love song on electric guitar (“Phirava daje phirava …”, first line of the verse which translates as “I travelled mother I travelled, I went to Tetovo, to see Mirvet, to steal her eyes”).
Tetovo it a town in Northern Macedonia. I realise I have been near there two decades ago, visiting my mother on her Balkan adventures (working for a non-governmental organisation, manning a polling station in post-war Serbia, smoking, drinking and playing endless cards)
The pastels make the landscapes even more mysterious and fairytale-like. I was going to take out my dulcimer which I haven’t touched in years but somehow I seem only to have more time with less time.(K)
Wow, dulcimer. I’d live hear that. I get little time to practice guitar and I’m not hood at this. I do have regular lessons. Without this I’d get nowhere.
I’d have to relearn the chords myself. Its been a long time. I probably have to look up how to tune it too–there are 4 or 5 different ways. Maybe next year…
I’ve been reading up in the dulcimer. What a fascinating instrument.
I love the droning sound. Joni Mitchell used it a few times in her recordings.
Oh cool. I’ve been listening to Joni Mitchell a lot recently.
By coincidence this week at my teachers suggestion, I’ve tuned the bass E string to D to create a drone below a melody in a D hybrid Phrygian Myxolydian scale. I’ve no real idea how this works but it’s an exercise in playing
I think Joni used different guitar tunings as well. Stringed instruments have many dimensions. I passed a violin and viola playing in the park yesterday…glorious!
I love your sketch and reworking. This is a great idea – two false colours , black and white. I must try this !
I like your dog sketches. You’ve shown a delicacy in the reworking of very complex shapes.
Dog time. Brilliant! I love the sketch
